It was born in the area of Fuente Segura (Jaén). It runs through the provinces of Jaén, Albacete. Murcia and Alicante. It empties into the Mediterranean, in Guardamar del Segura, after a distance of 325 km and a hydrographic basin of 19,525 km2. The Segura is one of the rivers with the greatest hydrological use, also known for its irregularity causing large floods alternated with long periods of drought, and in recent decades sadly famous for the serious problems of contamination of its waters, especially in the course low (Vega Baja). This problem has been brought before the courts of Murcia, which have not yet ruled. In the 20th century, the floods of 1946, 1948, 1973, 1978 and 1989 have gone down in history, with many of them exceeding 1000m3/s of maximum instantaneous flow. Due to this, it is the most controlled river in Europe and was channeled at the end of the 20th century in its lower basin. Its passage through Formentera is in the south of the town, giving rise to a series of groves, used by the inhabitants to walk in a warm and natural environment. The Segura has been for years a source of income for many inhabitants, since they largely benefited from its waters for their crops.
